Welcome Ran and Brian, OneBeacon’s summer law clerks

This summer, we’re pleased to welcome two law clerks to the OneBeacon Corporate Legal team. Ran Lu (University of Minnesota Law School) and Brian Ortiz (University of Iowa Law School) joined us this month as part of the Twin Cities Diversity in Practice (TCDIP) 1L Rotation Clerkship program.

TCDIP is a non-profit organization “comprised of leading Twin-Cities employers with a vision to create a vibrant and inclusive legal community and a mission to strengthen the efforts of member organizations to attract, recruit, advance, and retain attorneys of color.”  More information can be found on the organization’s website at http://diversityinpractice.org/about.

We’re very proud to be a corporate member and to support the program.  Welcome Ran and Brian!

Summer Intern Spotlight: David & Sam

Please join us in welcoming David Brumm! David is a Finance intern out of the Plymouth, MN office, and is from Maple Grove, MN. He attends the University of Minnesota – Carlson School, and is majoring in Business. During his time at OneBeacon, he hopes to gain more knowledge and experience working in the finance and accounting world. He hopes to apply the skills he learns from this experience to real world applications. When asked “Why OneBeacon,” he said the world of specialty insurance sounded interesting, and after speaking with our recruiters at his school’s career fair it seemed like a great fit! While he had plans to travel abroad earlier this year with his school, it was unfortunately canceled due to the pandemic. Japan was on the list of attending countries, but he still plans to get there someday!

Please also welcome Sam Kuennen! Sam is an Actuarial intern out of the Plymouth office, and is from Alexandria, MN. He joins us from the University of St. Thomas and is in the Actuarial Sciences program. Sam not only hopes to gain experience through working on meaningful projects, but he’s looking forward to making connections with fellow interns and colleagues. What attracted him to OneBeacon was the people and our culture. He appreciated the thoughtfulness of the interview process, and knew the company employs expert individuals who excel in what they do. He’s happy to be part of the OneBeacon community, and an organization that values its people. Recently, Sam listened to the audiobook “Can’t Hurt Me” by David Goggins. He also shared a fun fact with us- he can spin a basketball on his finger while doing a backwards somersault. Talk about talent!

Welcome David and Sam!

Welcome New Grads: Caroline & Geoff

This week we’re welcoming back past interns that are now joining us full time! Please welcome back Caroline Palen and Geoff Cooper.

Caroline is an Actuarial Trainee out of the Plymouth office, and is from Shoreview, MN. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire with a degree in actuarial sciences. She’s looking forward to learning more about OneBeacon’s different business units, and is excited to work with the actuarial group again. With an interest in P&C insurance, Caroline chose OneBeacon for its opportunistic environment where she can gain experience not only in actuarial experiences, but work directly with our various businesses. When asked if she could go anywhere in the world, she said she would go Bergen, Norway to visit her best friend and family. She also competed in sprint kayaking for three years in high school before becoming an avid runner, and her team had the opportunity to travel to competitions in Georgia, San Diego and Canada. If shipwrecked on a deserted island, she would bring her French press and an endless supply of coffee, as well as her running shoes.

Geoff Cooper is also an Actuarial Trainee out of the Plymouth office, and is from Hopkins, MN. Geoff graduated from the University of St. Thomas with a degree in actuarial sciences. He’s looking forward to developing his actuarial and analytical skills, in addition to growing his relationships with his colleagues. During Geoff’s internship last year, he appreciated the one-on-one training from his colleagues and managers, despite how busy they were. Like Caroline, he too has an interest in the P&C industry, and knows that OneBeacon is a great fit for him. He recently read The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien, and enjoyed winding down every evening and reading a different short story. A fun fact about Geoff is that he has dual citizenship in the U.S. and Australia.

Welcome back Caroline and Geoff! We’re excited to have you.

Summer Intern Spotlight: Matthew & Ryan

Please join us in welcoming Matthew McCormick! Matthew is a Business Development intern out of the Blue Bell office, and is from Horsham PA. He is a rising senior at the University of South Carolina, and is majoring in Risk Management and Insurance and Finance. During his time at OneBeacon, he hopes to not only gain more knowledge and perspective of the insurance industry, but to also learn more about the many roles of business development, whether it be underwriting or brokerage. He also hopes to further develop his professional brand and skill set. When asked “Why OneBeacon?” Matthew said he was attracted to OneBeacon for our expertise and professionalism in their extensive range of business segments from Financial Services and Entertainment, to Ocean Marine. Alongside that, he appreciates our company’s strong core values and principles. If he could go anywhere in the world, he’d travel to Ireland to indulge in the culture, as well as the fantastic golf courses they have to offer.

Please also welcome Ryan Holly! Ryan is an IT intern out of our Canton, MA office and is working remote from his hometown of Green Bay, WI. He’s a Computer Science major at the University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire and is looking forward to gaining experience in our IT department. Not only is he looking forward to sharpening his skill set, but he’s also interested in learning more about our specialty products and the industries we serve. If Ryan could go anywhere in the world, he would travel to Europe to visit Sweden, England and Germany. To keep himself occupied during his free time, he’s currently watching Better Call Saul. He may live in Green Bay, but he’s a Minnesota Vikings fan…and he blames his dad for that.

Best of luck to Matthew and Ryan this summer!

IMU’S Potter and Buffa Earn AMIM Designation

Congratulations to International Marine Underwriters’ Ben Potter and Joel Buffa, both of whom have recently earned their Associate in Marine Insurance Management (AMIM) designations. Potter and Buffa, both located in California, utilized their recent remote work situations to focus on the coursework to complete the designations and their hard work has paid off!

AMIM is the Insurance Institute of America’s professional designation for marine insurance professionals. The AMIM is designed to deepen the understanding of marine insurance for those who frequently advise clients in marine insurance cases. The AMIM’s areas of expertise include ocean marine insurance, inland marine insurance, principles of risk management and insurance, insurance company operations, legal environment of insurance and management. AMIM candidates gain improved knowledge about how marine insurance covers the damage or loss of ships, cargo, hulls, terminals, shipyards or any property by which cargo is acquired, transferred or held between the points of origin and final destination.

In addition to his AMIM, Joel hopes to have the last of his Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation exams completed this summer as well.  We wish him the best of luck!
