Celebrating Insurance Careers Month

This month we are teaming up with our industry colleagues to commemorate the second annual “Insurance Careers Month.” This industry initiative unites members of the insurance community to raise awareness of insurance as a desirable career choice. With nearly half of insurance professionals expected to retire within the next 15 years, we realize how critical it is to attract young talent to our workforce. During this month’s awareness campaign, we joined others in inspiring the next generation by sharing intriguing facts, career insights, tips and general information about insurance.

So, why choose a career in insurance?

Opportunity and growth, according to OneBeacon Government Risks’ VP of Business Development Brad York.

Challenge, stability and satisfaction, according to millennial Laura Peterson’s InsureMyPath.com blog. Laura, a member of OneBeacon Government Risks, shares an inspiring story about joining the industry.

A commitment to educating tomorrow’s leaders. OneBeacon is committed to fostering insurance knowledge among students and supporting risk management programs across the U.S. Earlier this week, OneBeacon launched its annual scholarship program, which awards 16 graduating high-school seniors with $2,000 college scholarships for the upcoming academic year. This month we are also attending two college career fairs. Although located in different states, our goal at these events is common: offer career opportunities to tomorrow’s leaders and spread awareness about our industry.

Team Boomer MVP

Volunteering is a selfless act, and when it involves a life-threatening medical condition affecting kids, it’s a particularly inspirational commitment. This describes OneBeacon Accident’s (OBA) Steve Mueller, who’s volunteered with the Boomer Esiason Foundation (BEF) for years. BEF is a dynamic partnership of leaders in the medical and business communities who volunteer to heighten awareness, education and quality of life for those affected by cystic fibrosis, while providing financial support to research aimed at finding a cure.

Steve’s commitment has been contagious, catching on among his OBA teammates and other friends and colleagues in the industry. His efforts now include serving on BEF’s Board of Directors, and more recently, recognition as the 2014 Timothy M. O’Brien Award recipient presented at BEF’s annual gala fundraiser. With OBA teammates in attendance and Charitable Trust sponsorship, Steve’s success and drive exhibited through his support of BEF and throughout all other aspects of his life were honored that evening.

The Timothy M. O’Brien Award was established in 2003 to honor an original BEF Board member who lost his life in the September 11 terrorist attacks. We congratulate Steve for all he does to help those struggling with cystic fibrosis and for supporting their fight for a cure.

IMU Participates in IICF’s Week of Giving Event

Employees from International Marine Underwriters’ Boston office recently participated in the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation’s (IICF) “Week of Giving” event, which gathers insurance industry volunteers to provide service to neighborhood & community nonprofits throughout the week.

As part of their volunteerism efforts, the group read stories to students of St. John School, which is located in the historic North End district of Boston, Mass. Their participation gained local press coverage in the North End Waterfront, which you can read here.

OneBeacon for One Fund

In response to the recent Boston Marathon bombings, Boston Mayor Tom Menino and Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick established The One Fund to collect donations for the families and businesses directly impacted by this tragedy. Their goal was simple – by very quickly creating this entity, the community could focus all contributions to a single organization. In fact, that’s why the name “The One Fund” was selected.

Like many groups in Greater Boston, the local OneBeacon teams decided to organize a fund raiser to support The One Fund. A raffle featuring over 20 themed baskets donated by various departments was held in our Canton, Mass. office on May 1st and raised close to $6,000. This generous contribution was augmented by donations from employees across the company and enhanced by a nice contribution from the OneBeacon Charitable Trust. Overall, the OneBeacon community was able to donate $35,000 to The One Fund.

To date, The One Fund has collected over $34 million, which is an incredible testament to the generosity of Greater Boston and beyond. We are proud to be among this group, coming together to support One Fund.

Keep Boston in Your Thoughts

No matter where you were yesterday afternoon, in a heartbeat, we all became Bostonians. The irony of tragedy at the finish line of an event that is all about endurance and the strength of the human spirit is lost on none of us. For us at OneBeacon, the shock was a little closer to home as we trace our origins to Boston, and our namesake Beacon Street is one of the avenues hosting the annual Patriot’s Day race.

Fortunately, everyone from the OneBeacon community is safe, but we are all greatly saddened by such an inexplicable event. Please join us in keeping the families of those affected in your thoughts and prayers, and helping Boston through this most difficult of times.
