Please join us in welcoming Bennett Sell! Bennett is an actuarial intern out of the Plymouth office, and is from Stillwater, Minnesota. He attends the University of Minnesota Duluth and studies actuarial sciences. When asked “Why OneBeacon?” he said he’s drawn to the company because of the smaller work environment, welcoming colleagues and the unique insurance products. He’s looking forward to furthering his actuarial skills and building strong relationships. If he could go anywhere in the world, he’d travel to New Zealand for its surfing and wildlife. One of Bennett’s special talents is being blessed with the perfect pitch, meaning he can tell you which music note/chord is playing just by listening.
Please also welcome Liam Jackson! Liam is an IT intern out of our Salem office. He is from Roanoke, Virginia and attends Liberty College. He was attracted to OneBeacon for its image and the opportunity to be a part of a team. He’s hoping to gain both experience in the computer science field, and a greater understanding of what a positive office culture looks like (now virtual of course!). If he could go anywhere in the world, it would be Poland because of the abundance of culture and history. If Liam had to be shipwrecked with two items, it would be a soccer ball for activity, and a book (most likely the full Lord of the Rings set).
We’re excited to have our interns join us remotely this summer. To get to know them better, we’re kicking off our second annual summer spotlight series introducing each of them with some fun facts, and what they’re looking forward to most this summer!
Please join us in welcoming Katie Long! Katie is an underwriting intern out of the Chicago office, who will be working with the Management Liability team. Katie is from Glen Ellyn, Illinois and attends Illinois Wesleyan University. Katie is eager to get hands-on experience that she can apply to both her education and post college career. She’s interested in pursuing a career in the insurance industry, and hopes to learn as much as she can this summer about underwriting, as well as make connections at OneBeacon. Outside of coursework, Katie’s hobbies are singing and playing the piano. She’s still very involved in music on campus and at home. If she could travel anywhere in the world, she would want to go to Spain. When asked what television show she last watched, she said Big Little Lies on HBO, and would highly recommend for anyone who has not seen it.
Please also welcome back Jacob Pawlowski! Jacob is an actuarial intern out of the Plymouth office, and it will be his second summer joining us. He will be a senior at Minnesota State University Moorhead, studying Actuarial Science and Criminal Justice. He’s eager to return to OneBeacon because of our company’s size, the people and the expertise we have in various industries. He’s also looking forward to learning more about the Government Risks business, and looks forward to continuing to build relationships with employees. Jacob’s hobbies include backpacking, camping and snowmobiling, as well as playing the bass, guitar, tuba and trombone.
Our hearts are broken over last week’s events, which took place not far from our U.S. corporate offices. The frustration and anger that George Floyd’s death has sparked is sadly all too familiar. We encourage everyone to dig deep and use the passion of this moment to consider how we can help address racism. Our corporate values include behaving with integrity, fairness and kindness, and respecting the diversity of our community. We stand united with the black community and committed to living our values and helping make a difference where we live and work. Let’s start the conversations, consider and accelerate change, and not disappoint the memory of George Floyd.
Our summer interns and new grads are starting in the coming weeks! Though times may be different due to COVID-19, we’re excited to have them join us virtually from their homes in Massachusetts, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Virginia. Our 14 interns will be working in the Actuarial, Audit, Finance, IT, Underwriting and Business Development fields alongside our teams of experts. Additionally, we’re welcoming four new grads to join our Actuarial and Underwriting teams full-time. We look forward to working with them and being a part of their career development. Please join us in welcoming OneBeacon’s newest additions!
At OneBeacon, we continue to try and find creative methods to stay connected during this unprecedented time of social distancing and remote work. Our International Marine Underwriters (IMU) and Technology teams have both recently come up with unique ways to stay connected and bring a little fun to their days.
Ever since our company transitioned to remote work, IMU’s North Pacific Region has had regular conference calls. Recently the team decided to upgrade those calls to FaceTime.
“It’s wonderful to see each other’s faces, and feel more connected than to just a phone speaker,” says IMU’s Lauren Dixon.
The team is also participating in a 30 day song challenge, where team members pick one song a day based on a unique daily category. Learning a bit more about everyone’s musical tastes and interests has brought some unique fun.

Technology Shows Their Work The Technology team recently decided to put their own spin on a remote work stations selfie contest. Participants were asked to take a selfie at their home “offices”– serious and/or silly. The winner, Pam Pearson, was chosen by a neutral judge (team member spouse) and received a prize in the mail.
OneBeacon Accident & Health is proud to support truckers and their hard work and dedication through COVID-19. They’ve continued to show determination in their day-to-day, and OneBeacon is proud to stand by their side. That’s why the Accident & Health division partnered with the American Trucking Associations (ATA) and the St. Christopher Truckers Relief Fund to support the community through the #ThankATrucker Campaign.
It’s week five of working from home, and teams across the organization are continuing to get creative with ways to staying connected. Whether it’s setting up weekly video calls or playing guessing games via email, it’s encouraging and fun to see colleagues stay in touch with one another. Here are just some examples we’ve seen so far!
At the beginning of each month, the one of our teams meets outside of the office for a rejuvenation walk. To keep the tradition going, they went on their own walks around their neighborhoods along with their at-home colleagues. Check out the photos below from their strolls with their home team.
Various photo sharing activities are among some of the more popular ways teams are staying connected. Our Financial Services team played “Whose Workstation is This?” where the team had to guess whose home work area it is. Now, they’ve moved on to “Whose Artwork is This?” and have asked members of the team to submit photos of a piece of artwork of any medium in their homes. Once the correct person is selected, they then give a background story of that piece.
Many of our offices have also hosted virtual happy hours and mid-day check-ins. Our Boston office every other week gets together for “media club” where office members meet to discuss recent shows they’ve watched, books they’ve read, etc.
It’s great to see teams collaborating in such creative ways. Virtual connections are the new normal, and we look forward to seeing more of these interactions.
Our Specialty Health division of our Accident & Health team recently met in Sanibel Island, FL for their annual underwriting meeting. They took a look at their 2019 accomplishments, and discussed 2020 planning and goals. The meeting included presentations from underwriting, claims and sales, as well as clinical consultants. The group engaged in discussions around industry trends in medical and prescription therapies, and other topics. Following the meetings, the group enjoyed some sun and sand in Sanibel.
Our Specialty Property team recently all met in Las Vegas, NV for their annual underwriting meeting to discuss 2019 accomplishments, and 2020 planning. The meeting included presentations from regional underwriting teams and key business partners, while also engaging in discussions around industry trends. Following the meetings, the group enjoyed dinner out on the town, and hit the links at Topgolf!
From all of us at OneBeacon, we’re wishing you a safe and happy holiday! This time of year is all about giving back and spreading joy. In honor of that, the OneBeacon Charitable Trust is donating $50,000 to nonprofits important to our employees and their communities this holiday.
