Community Giving Look-Back

At OneBeacon, we are pleased to support those nonprofits that matter most to our employees and producer partners through our Charitable Trust. We also support education in the form of 16 college scholarships awarded annually, and by funding several risk-management scholarships at colleges offering such programs.  We invite you to review our year of giving as documented in our 2014 Charitable Trust Annual Report that is now available on our website. Printed copies may be obtained by contacting us at charitabletrust@onebeacon.com. We are very proud of our community’s demonstrated practice of giving back. As we like to say, “Way to give!”

Georgia on our minds!

To help ensure the ongoing success of our industry, we appreciate opportunities to educate and mentor the next generation of insurance specialists. One recent example came through OneBeacon Technology Insurance (OBTI), which committed to a five-year sponsorship of a scholarship targeting students enrolled in the Georgia State Risk Management & Insurance program. The annual contribution is funded by the OneBeacon Charitable Trust. Recently, OBTI President John Wurzler presented the first sponsorship check to David Buechner, Director, Georgia State University Risk Management Foundation. And to reinforce our commitment, John will additionally assume a position on the Foundation’s board.

Team Boomer MVP

Volunteering is a selfless act, and when it involves a life-threatening medical condition affecting kids, it’s a particularly inspirational commitment. This describes OneBeacon Accident’s (OBA) Steve Mueller, who’s volunteered with the Boomer Esiason Foundation (BEF) for years. BEF is a dynamic partnership of leaders in the medical and business communities who volunteer to heighten awareness, education and quality of life for those affected by cystic fibrosis, while providing financial support to research aimed at finding a cure.

Steve’s commitment has been contagious, catching on among his OBA teammates and other friends and colleagues in the industry. His efforts now include serving on BEF’s Board of Directors, and more recently, recognition as the 2014 Timothy M. O’Brien Award recipient presented at BEF’s annual gala fundraiser. With OBA teammates in attendance and Charitable Trust sponsorship, Steve’s success and drive exhibited through his support of BEF and throughout all other aspects of his life were honored that evening.

The Timothy M. O’Brien Award was established in 2003 to honor an original BEF Board member who lost his life in the September 11 terrorist attacks. We congratulate Steve for all he does to help those struggling with cystic fibrosis and for supporting their fight for a cure.

OneBeacon for One Fund

In response to the recent Boston Marathon bombings, Boston Mayor Tom Menino and Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick established The One Fund to collect donations for the families and businesses directly impacted by this tragedy. Their goal was simple – by very quickly creating this entity, the community could focus all contributions to a single organization. In fact, that’s why the name “The One Fund” was selected.

Like many groups in Greater Boston, the local OneBeacon teams decided to organize a fund raiser to support The One Fund. A raffle featuring over 20 themed baskets donated by various departments was held in our Canton, Mass. office on May 1st and raised close to $6,000. This generous contribution was augmented by donations from employees across the company and enhanced by a nice contribution from the OneBeacon Charitable Trust. Overall, the OneBeacon community was able to donate $35,000 to The One Fund.

To date, The One Fund has collected over $34 million, which is an incredible testament to the generosity of Greater Boston and beyond. We are proud to be among this group, coming together to support One Fund.

OneBeacon Holiday Donation

This holiday season our animated holiday e-card featured a very special charitable giving component. Those who received the card were able to cast their vote among three worthy nonprofit organizations selected to receive a share of $30,000 from the OneBeacon Charitable Trust.

After nearly 1,000 votes from OneBeacon producers, vendors and partners, the tally for allocating the 2012 OneBeacon holiday gift donation is in! The OneBeacon Charitable Trust will be making the following donations:

Red Cross – Sandy Relief: $10,500

American Cancer Society: $13,000

City Year: $6,500

Happy New Year!

Think Local; Give Big

In recognition of those in need during the holidays, the OneBeacon Charitable Trust once again has made a generous donation. The Trust allocated $60,000 for distribution to nonprofits in those communities where OneBeacon has a local presence. Each of our offices selected a worthy organization where we may already volunteer or offer support, or that is simply well recognized for helping its neighbors.

Below is the list of nonprofits we supported through this holiday donation, with the sponsoring office noted in parentheses. And as we noted in our most recent blog post, we are donating an additional $30,000 to three national nonprofits, with the actual amount determined by those viewing our holiday card. If you wish to participate, please view our prior post dated December 17.

Wishing you all a very happy holiday!
